Lesson 15 - Geoterms
Demography
The study of human population
The demography class was very interesting, I enjoyed learning about the rise and fall of populations.
Dependency Ratio
The amount of non-working citizens compared to working citizens.
Having a high dependency ratio can be very straining on the economy of a certain region.
Life Expectancy
The average age of people in a certain region.
Life expectancy has raised almost everywhere in the world in the past few decades.
Replacement Rate
The number of children needed to be born in order to replace the number of elderly dying.
A replacement rate of 2.1 would mean a population is growing whereas 1.9 would mean the population is shrinking.
Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
The average number of children a woman gives birth to in a certain region.
Total Fertility Rates could change due to trends and other events that could effect birthing.
Chapter 18 - Geoterms
Ethnic Group
A group of people in a region who share the same culture and ethnicity.
In Russia today most ethnic groups are soviet.
Nation
A massive group of people who share the same history and culture. (Country)
The nation of people all got together and sang the national anthem in honor of their culture.
Nationalism
The feeling of representing and/or loving ones culture or nation.
There was a strong sense of nationalism at the war veterans burial.
Nation-State
An independent state or country.
Israel is a Nation-state.
State
A certain area that a section of a government runs.
Here is the state of California we have slightly different laws than that of the other 49 states.
Chapter 23 - Geoterms
Apartheid
A former South African law of segregation.
Due to the apartheid my child couldn't go to the same school as the other kids.
Distribution
How wealth and power is given to different groups of people.
The unfair distribution in South Africa lead to a very uneven amount of power to the whites.
Multiratial
Having multiple races.
A multiratial society is bound to have struggles for power and wealth between races.
Segregation
The separation of different groups of people and ways of life.
Segregation has happened in almost every civilization ever.
Chapter 22 - Geoterms
Coloanialism
When one country owns another land far away from their country.
Colonialism was very popular to cease resources when a homeland runs out.
Cultural Region
A certain region where people are set apart by the way people live and act.
The cultural regions of Nigeria is very diverse.
Ethnic Diversity
Varying people from different cultural backgrounds.
An ethnically diverse community can be very beneficial but also could lead to political problems.
Linguistic Group
Group of people who speak a certain language.
People from the same linguistic group are most likely from the same cultural region as well.
Chapter 26- Geoterms
Environmental Degradation
The constant worsening of soil in an area.
Environmental Degradation can be a farmers worst enemy.
Groundwater
Water under the ground, underground rivers, wells.
A population with polluted lakes and rivers turn to groundwater, which is usually polluted as well.
Salinization
The increase in salinity in either soil or water.
Salinization can be a very dangerous thing for a community as it can leave them with a drought or famine.
Water Stress
When a community goes through a drought.
The water stress is very high in the area at the moment.
